Three Minute Thesis 3MT
What is Three-Minute Thesis?
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland which challenges graduate students to present a compelling speech about their research and its significance to non-academic persons in three minutes or less. Students are judged on their audience engagement and communicating the significance of their research. Importantly, the 3MT is not judged on the progress of the student's project, so first year graduate students are encouraged to participate! Presenting the ideas, planned approach and potential impact of the research is enough for an effective 3MT presentation.
Why participate in 3MT?
Participating in the 3MT competition provides an excellent opportunity to hone your ability to effectively communicate your research to a non-specialist and non-academic audience. Additionally, the 3MT gives students an opportunity to share their project with the community and is a great way to discover what your fellow students are researching!
How do I make a 3MT presentation?
First off, take a moment to view the recording of the 2018 3MT winner, Melissa Ruggiero, linked below! All 3MT presentations are done without a laser pointer and use only a single side that contains no animations. For more details, check out the official 3MT rules and judging criteria linked below. Also, join us either online or in person at the 3MT ASCEND workshop on March 3rd at noon on Zoom for ideas on where to start and/or tips to improve your current 3MT presentation!
Let's Do It! How do I participate?
Registration is now open. As of this year, you DO NOT need to submit an abstract or presentation a poster/oral talk to compete in the 3MT competition. After registering, you will receive an email describing how to submit your single, static slide. And that's it!
